The founders of the world-renowned VISION54 training program and the authors of the bestselling Every Shot Must Have a Purpose take golf instruction to the next level in this groundbreaking new approach to mastering the game.
Golf is a beloved yet technical game, so a sound swing and precise technique are essential. Most golfers who want to improve their skills go to the range and work painstakingly on their swings, not realizing it’s often their performance state on the course that needs work, not their technique. Simple things such as awareness of your balance, tension, and tempo, as well as the ability to control mental, emotional, and social variables you encounter while playing can quickly take your game to a new performance level.
Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott, founders of VISION54’s groundbreaking and innovative golf program are here to help. Aimed at both the weekend golfer and the advanced player, each chapter presents a series of “human skills”—including assignments, explorations, and mini-lessons—that strip away the complexity surrounding swing technique and playing consistency—the conditional variations that plague golfers.
Be A Player is the must-have book for any golfer who wants to unite technical skills and on-course performance seamlessly and effectively. With this cutting-edge text by your side, you will become a true student of VISION54 and a better player better on the course…where it matters most!

"I am always leery of buying yet another golf instruction book, and I have been researching books from Vision 54 for some time. When I saw that they released BE A PLAYER, it looked like it was the way to go, and I purchased the Kindle version. Their concepts may not be for everyone, but they were right on target for me.
This book does not concern itself with swing fundamentals, it is about the mental side of the game. You will learn about issues that prevent you from playing up to your potential on the golf course. You will learn more about yourself on the course, why you play well and why you do not play well. There are many subtle things that affect you while you are playing and you were most likely unaware of them, or how they change how you play.
Once you are aware of the aspects they discuss you can monitor yourself during a round and make adjustments between rounds and even during rounds."

Be a Player A Breakthrough Approach to Playing Better ON the Golf Course Pia Nilsson Lynn Marriott 9781476788036 Books Reviews
- I am always leery of buying yet another golf instruction book, and I have been researching books from Vision 54 for some time. When I saw that they released BE A PLAYER, it looked like it was the way to go, and I purchased the version.
Once you are aware of the aspects they discuss you can monitor yourself during a round and make adjustments between rounds and even during rounds. - Haven't you wondered why great golfers come in all shapes and sizes? By far, Pia and Lynn understand it is not about the technical but the mental. You can take lessons to perfect your ball strike and be respectable BUT if you want to start scoring and really having fun playing golf then read the book. Everyone is different and to play well consistently you need to know how to motivate and control YOU. You need to know what works best for you and only you from the moment you step up to the tee to when you are stuck still playing five hours later. The better you know yourself the better you play. Not a bad premise for life either! Buy the book and you won't be disappointed.
- I have read all of pia and lynn's books and they are all phenomenal, and each one of them take your golf game to a new level. Their most recent book, Be A player continues to take you even further into the internal world of golf, which addresses the saying that golf is 90% mental. While traditional golf instruction continues to only focus on external side of golf; technique, technology and physical fitness. This book will help anyone, at any level of golf. Be prepared to be shocked as the very 1st round after reading this book I got my 1st hole in one. Thank you Los and Lynn!!
- The best thing you can read to improve and enjoy the game a great deal more. I read two of her previous books and thought they were good. This new one takes her previous thoughts several steps further. One of the things she talks about, which I agree with, is what a waste of time for amateurs to spend endless hours pounding balls on the range. I agree the best "training" is on the course. And, how counterproductive quick fix lessons can be. Pia's ideas on grip pressure, tempo and tension were just a few of the things I took away from her book.
- As a researcher and teacher of topics on human performance and the mind, I have a pretty high bar for the books I read, enjoy, and then actually write a review for...
I've read a lot of golf books and other books on pairing top technical skills (e.g. swing) with human performance skills (e.g. focus), and I was deeply impressed by this book.
There are many books that have nice sounding platitudes on the "mental side" of the game, but this book expands your thinking on what that really means, and gives you step-by-step ways to actually do it. I don't even play golf, but I got a lot from this book! - I've read a lot of golf books and taken several weekend certification classes for a wide range of golf related topics. This book is far and away the best if you want to understand your golf game and what it takes to improve, and has nothing to do with technique.
- The best golf book I have read. It is not so much about technique as it is about bringing order to your mind and swing. Balance, tension and tempo are vital as are the golfer's ability to use his/her Think Box, Play Box, and Memory Box. So far, all of it has helped me improve my game.
- I've read
- Rotella's Golf is not a Game of Perfect
- Gio Valiente's Fearless Golf
- Zen Golf
- Michael Murphy's Golf in the Kingdom
And this book is the better than all of them combined. It not only tells you how you should think (on the course and practice tee) to play your best golf, it gives you practical questions to ask yourself and exercises to implement the methodologies.
I especially loved the neurological, psychological, and behavioral research the author references from Daniel Kannemann to Amy Cuddy to Anders Eriksson (respectively Nobel Laureate of Thinking Fast and Slow fame, Harvard Prof of posture-mind effect, FSU Psych Prof of 10,000 hours mastery fame) and others.
I will use these lessons in my golf game as well as my business life.
